What are the contraindications of Danshen?

Speaking of ginseng, most people's first reaction is ginseng, but everyone also knows that good ginseng is often rare. In the history of Chinese medicine, the most commonly used prescription is a traditional Chinese medicine called Salvia miltiorrhiza. Salvia miltiorrhiza is also a widely used traditional Chinese medicine in today's society. So, today, let's learn about the contraindications of Salvia miltiorrhiza.

Danshen, a traditional Chinese medicine. It is the dried root and rhizome of Salvia miltiorrhiza, a plant of the Lamiaceae family. Dig it up in spring and autumn, remove the mud and sand, and dry it. It is distributed in most parts of the country. It has the effects of promoting blood circulation and removing blood stasis, promoting menstruation and relieving pain, clearing the heart and eliminating restlessness, cooling blood and eliminating carbuncle. It is used for chest pain, heart pain, epigastric and flank pain, accumulation of masses, pain due to heat, restlessness and insomnia, irregular menstruation, dysmenorrhea, amenorrhea, and swelling and pain of sores.

Perennial herb, 30 to 80 cm tall. The root is slender, cylindrical, and has a vermilion outer skin. The stem is quadrangular and branched at the top. Leaves are opposite; odd-pinnate compound leaves, with 3 to 5 leaflets. The leaflets at the top are larger than the lateral leaves and are oval in shape. The cymes are terminating and axillary, the flowers are lip-shaped, blue-purple, the upper lip is upright, and the lower lip is shorter than the upper lip. The nutlets are oblong and dark brown or black when ripe. The flowering period is from May to October, and the fruiting period is from June to November.

The rhizome of Salvia miltiorrhiza is short and thick, and the stem base sometimes remains at the top. There are several roots, which are long cylindrical and slightly curved. Some are branched and have whisker-like fine roots, 10 to 20 cm long and 0.3 to 1 cm in diameter. The surface is brownish red or dark brownish red, rough, and has longitudinal wrinkles. The bark of old roots is loose, mostly purple-brown, and often peels off in scales. It is hard and brittle, with a loose cross section with cracks or slightly flat and dense. The bark is brown-red, the wood is gray-yellow or purple-brown, and the vascular bundles are yellow-white and arranged radially. Slight smell, slightly bitter taste.

The traditional Chinese medicine Danshen is a very commonly used blood-activating and blood-stasis-removing medicine in clinical practice. However, it should be noted that there are contraindications to the use of Salvia miltiorrhiza, and some medicines cannot be used in combination with Salvia miltiorrhiza. This is especially true for patients with cardiovascular and cerebrovascular diseases, because cardiovascular and cerebrovascular treatment drugs often cannot be taken together with Salvia miltiorrhiza.

Cytochrome C Danshen injection contains three acidic components in addition to tanshinone. Cytochrome C is an iron-containing protein. The mixed intravenous drip of the two drugs can produce a complex reaction to generate danshenphenol-iron complex, which makes the color of the injection darker or even turbid, thereby reducing the efficacy of both drugs.

Hemostatic drugs: Salvia miltiorrhiza can inhibit platelet aggregation, activate the plasminogen-plasmin system, promote fibrinolysis, antagonize antifibrinolytic drugs, and reduce the efficacy of hemostatic drugs such as vitamin K and hemostatic aromatic acid. Therefore, the two should not be used together.

Antacids Commonly used antacids in clinical practice include magnesium trisilicate, magnesium oxide mixture, aluminum hydroxide, mesothelin, metoprolol, and magnesium bismuth. The main active ingredients in Salvia miltiorrhiza are tanshinone A, B, C and cryptotanshinone, all of which can form chelates with metal ions in antacid drugs, thereby reducing the bioavailability of Salvia miltiorrhiza and affecting its efficacy.

Vitamin B1, etc. The water-soluble ingredients contained in Salvia miltiorrhiza, such as catecholamine and dihydroxyphenyllactic acid, are active ingredients that are compounds containing acidic phenolic hydroxyl groups and have properties similar to tannins. They can combine with drugs such as vitamin B1, vitamin B6, strychnine, ephedrine, and lobeline to form precipitated compounds, reducing the efficacy of the drugs.

Atropine Atropine drugs can block M-choline receptors, relieve the inhibition of the vagus nerve on the heart, and accelerate the heart rate. The antihypertensive effect of Salvia miltiorrhiza can be blocked by atropine drugs.

Androgens: Tanshinone, the active ingredient contained in Salvia miltiorrhiza, has the effect of antagonizing androgens, which can reduce the effects of androgens such as methyltestosterone and testosterone propionate. The two should not be used together.

Well, today we have learned about the contraindications of Danshen. Danshen has a wide range of applications, but there are also many contraindications that need to be paid attention to. It can be seen that people who take medicine should consult a doctor whether they can take Danshen before taking it. In this way, you can better protect your health.
