[Source] It is the fruit or whole herb of Polygonum sagittatum of the Polygonaceae family.

[Original morphology] Annual herb with slender stems, up to 1 meter long, spreading or semi-erect, quadrangular, glabrous, with oblique hooked spines along the ridges. The leaves are oblong ovate-lanceolate, 5-10 cm long, 1.5-2.5 cm wide, deeply concave at the base, with ovate-triangular auricles, glabrous, with hooked spines only along the midrib below, and slightly thin in texture; the petiole is up to 2 cm long, with 3-4 or 1-2 rows of hooked spines on the petiole; the sheath is 5-10 mm long, membranous, and glabrous. The inflorescence is terminal, usually in pairs, with dense but small numbers of flowers, smooth and hairless pedicels; bracts are long ovate and acute; perianth is 5-lobed, white or pink, with 8 stamens; styles are 3 and divided. Achenes are triangular, black, about 3 mm long, and wrapped in persistent perianth. Flowering period is from May to June.

[Habitat distribution] Grown at the foot of mountains, roadsides, and waterside. Distributed in Heilongjiang, Liaoning, Jilin, Hebei, Henan, Shaanxi, Shandong, Jiangsu, Zhejiang, Taiwan and other places.
