[Source] Medicinal material source: The root of Panax notoginseng, a plant of the Araliaceae family.

[Original form] Perennial herb, 20-60cm high. The main root is fleshy and ginger-shaped; the rhizome grows prostrately, with short and thickened internodes. The stem is single, dark green, sometimes turning purple at the tip, striated, smooth and hairless. Palmate compound leaves, 3-7 leaves whorled at the top of the stem; petiole 8-15cm long, 3-5 leaflets, leaflets membranous, elliptic to oblong or obovate-oblong, middle leaflet larger, 8-18cm long, 3.5-6cm wide, leaflets on both sides smaller, 6-11.5cm long, 3-4cm wide, apex acuminate to long acuminate, base cuneate, margin serrate or slightly serrate; veins on both sides sparsely covered with bristles. Umbel solitary at the top of the stem; with 80-100 flowers, peduncle about 25cm long, sparsely covered with short soft hairs, without bracts at the base, bracteoles linear or narrowly lanceolate, clustered at the base of pedicels; calyx cup-shaped, with 5 triangular teeth on the edge; corolla green, 5 petals, triangular-long ovate; 5 stamens, filaments longer than petals; ovary 2-chambered, 2 styles, fused below the middle, curved outwards when fruiting. The berries are drupe-like, oblate-kidney-shaped, and red when ripe. There are 2 seeds, triangular-hemispherical. Flowering period is July-August, and fruiting period is August-October.
