[Source] It is the roots, fruits and seeds of Solanum lycopersicum, a plant of the Solanaceae family. Roots: harvested in summer and autumn; fruits: harvested in autumn and winter, washed, dried or used fresh.

[Original form] Thorny prostrate herb, 0.5 to 0.7 meters high. The stems and leaves are covered with hard spines or star-shaped hairs 0.5 to 2 cm long. The leaves are single and alternate, elliptical or ovate, 4 to 7 cm long, 2.5 to 4 cm wide, with pointed or obtuse tips and deeply wavy or deeply fissured margins. 2 to 5 flowers are arranged in cymes and are arranged laterally; the calyx is 5-lobed with small thorns; the corolla is bell-shaped, 5-lobed, blue-purple, and has fine hairs on the outside. The berries are spherical, yellow, light green with dark green reticular patterns when not mature, and the sepals are persistent. Flowering period is from June to July.

[Habitat distribution] It grows in relatively drier places beside villages, roadsides, wastelands and river valleys. Distributed in Fujian, Guangxi, Yunnan and other places.

[Chemical composition] The fruit contains solanine and solanine, both of which are sugar-containing bioalkaloids. Hydrolysis produces solanine or solanine and glucose, rhamnose and galactose respectively. It also contains fatty oil and sterols; the fatty oil is semi-drying, and its fatty acids are oleic acid 42.93, linoleic acid 36.18, palmitic acid 5.37, stearic acid 9.77%, etc. One of the sterols is solanasterol. It also contains diosgenin; the ash content is 5.9%, which contains K, Na, Mg and traces of Fe, Cl, etc.

[Pharmacological action] This plant is commonly used by Indian people to treat cough, fever and heart disease. The alcohol extract of the whole plant and the bioactive guanosine part have cardiotonic effects. At a certain concentration, it can enhance the contraction and tension of isolated frog hearts, cat atrial and ventricular muscles, and papillary muscles. However, if the concentration is too high, it will reduce the contraction force. It can also enhance the contraction amplitude of the atria and ventricles of intact dogs, and gradually increase blood pressure. Long-term use of the drug can significantly reduce the histamine content in the lungs and bronchi of guinea pigs (80%), while slightly increasing the histamine in the skin and stomach; intraperitoneal injection of 2 mg/kg of glycosides for two weeks has a protective effect on guinea pigs sensitized to egg white. Its therapeutic effect on bronchial patients may be due to the depletion of histamine in the bronchi and lungs; in addition, the inorganic nitrate components it contains also have certain expectorant effects. Crude extracts, alcohol extracts of leaf stems, and resinous components also have some histamine-releasing effects.

[Additional prescription] ① For the treatment of orchitis: stew seven roots of Solanum lycopersicum, five roots of Verbena officinalis, and seven roots of Phragmites australis with pig kidneys; stew with green-shell duck eggs is also acceptable.
