[Other names] Five-finger rickets, five-finger wind, mountain bauhinia (Guangxi Medicinal Plant List), Meihanen (Dai name).

[Source] It is the root or trunk heartwood of the Verbenaceae plant Vitex quinata . It can be harvested throughout the year, peeled, the core taken out and dried.

[Original form] Tree, up to 10 to 20 meters high. The heartwood of the trunk is yellowish brown and has a strong odor. Palmate compound leaves are opposite, with petioles 5-10 cm long; there are 5 leaflets, rarely 3, the middle leaflet is the largest, lanceolate, 5-12 cm long, 2-3 cm wide, with acuminate tip, cuneate base, entire margin, glabrous, with scattered white glandular dots on the upper side and yellow glandular dots on the lower side. The panicles are axillary, 10 to 20 cm long, and covered with gray hairs; the bracts are linear; the calyx is cup-shaped, truncated, and covered with small soft hairs, which expand into a disk when fruiting; the corolla is yellowish-white. The drupe is oval in shape, with a persistent calyx at the bottom. The flowering period is late autumn and early winter.

【Habitat distribution】Growing in forests or cultivated. Distributed in Yunnan, Guangdong, Guangxi and other places.

【Nature and flavor】Light, neutral.

【Functions and indications】Relieves cough and asthma, calms and reduces fever. Treat acute and chronic tracheitis, bronchitis, wheezing, coughing, shortness of breath, and fever and irritability in children.
